Abstract: | Free trade theory has made an important contribution to the shaping of post-war international trade. Development of free trade paradigm and of its criticism is reviewed, determinants of trade barriers are analysed. The concept of free trade and protectionism is contrasted, the rationality of state policies is discussed and it is shown by examples that national governments may act rationally yet violate free trade principles. It is argued that free trade paradigms provide a too narrowly based, simplified analysis of international trade. Present international conflicts represent a competition between two corporate management models /fordism and toyotism/, thus - due to the globalisation of toyotism - demands for trade barriers are unlikely to cease. |
