Abstract:In this essay, a critique is presented of the liberal business ethos. The narrow normative prescriptions of the liberal business ethos have become the dominant framework for business ethics in American society today, but as is demonstrated in this essay, this ethical framework is built on a number of inaccurate assumptions and misunderstandings. It distorts American history and character, it assumes a simplistic and inaccurate caricature of human nature, it ignores the individual's moral relationship with society and the role of shared social norms in regulating economic exchanges, and it badly misinterprets the moral philosophy of Adam Smith.
