Abstract: | The paper discusses stock options as a mode of employee compensation. It presents a case study on the telecommunications equipment company Ericsson, originated from Sweden, that used American mode of compensating hich-tech personnel in its business. This experiment was held during years 1998 - 2002 and in 2003 Ericsson's board refused to renew the company's stock option program. Instead, the company's human resources developed a unique employee stock purchase plan. The study shows that the US-style employee stock option plan is not necessarily the best option for a European corporation; it also shows how alternative business models can result as a competitive advantage in the global competition within the ICT industry. |
