Abstract:Environmental damage in Estonia is caused largely by the use of shale for electricity generation. Shale is Estonia's most important source of energy, accounting for more than 60% of primary energy consumption; its importance has increased further in recent years due to the sharp decline in Russian crude oil and natural gas exports. On the other hand, in 1993 primary energy consumption was 45% lower than in 1990, reflecting the decline in GDP and industrial output and the disproportionate contraction of a number of energy-intensive branches.
