Abstract:One could easily fill a football stadium with business academics and consultants who deride the strategy of diversification, unrelated diversification, that is to say. To back up their case they can point to half a dozen studies in the past decade that document the wastefulness of most diversification, which in big companies is invariably done via acquisition. But there are five companies that have made a thriving business of taking on unrelated businesses.
