Abstract:This paper uses Estonian Labor Force Survey, covering retrospectively years from 1989 to 1994, to study potential wage discrimination (herein: w.d.) against women, looking at full-time workers of Estonian and Russian ethnicity in 1980, during the Soviet period, in 1994, the last full year of the survey and three years after Estonian independence and the beginning of the transition to a market economy. Substantial evidence is found of w.d. against women in both years. In fact, the results indicate that the relative level of w.d. against female workers in Estonia changed very little btw. 1989 and 1994 when occupational dummies are excluded from the wage equations.
