Abstract:This feature article deals with families, women (hereafter as: w.) and part-time employment. While the gender pay gap has been narrowing for w. in full-time (as: f-t.) jobs, the pay penalty for the 40 percent of w. working part-time (as: p-t.) has risen, reflecting the growing polarisation of p-t. jobs in low-wage occupations (here as: occps). Furthermore, w. experience downgrading from higher-skill f-t. into lower-skill p-t. occps. W.'s reported hours and job satisfaction are highest in p-t. work, but life-satisfaction is scarcely affected by hours of work.
