Abstract:The paper explores the roles of the professions in modern society. By assuming leading roles in the creation and tending of institutions, the professions have become the preeminent institutional agents of our time. The professions work methods are various. They go from trying to create cultural-cognitive frameworks to devising normative prescriptions to guide behavior, and to exercising coercive authority. The roles of individual professionals within their professional community are also numerous ranging from devising and testing general principles to transporting these ideas to varying communities, and to applying the principles to individual cases. The institutional model has clearly changed over time.
