Abstract:This article investigates the reasons behind the failure in merging Danish established private slaughterhouses and the rising co-operative ones in 1890/91. The authors used the concepts of modern industrial firm by Alfred Chandler as a framework for this study. They reviewed the negotiation process and the motives of both sides. The results outline a number of elements and aspects that affected the merging process and its failure. Political and social arguments played more significant role in the negotiations than technological and economical reasons. Either of the main factors was referred in Chandler’s framework.
