Abstract:It is shown that business education/occupations (hereafter as: e/o.) have expanded and that technical e/o. have contracted in the Czech Republic and Poland since 1990. These changes are interpreted as an adjustment necessary for their transition (henceforth as: trsn.) to a market economy. The same pattern is not found in Hungary due to the earlier timing of its trsn. Built-up is an aggregate model with labour reallocating in response to changing demand structure (as: dem-str). When calibrated with the Czech and Polish data, the model generates a large movement of workers with technical education and experience into business occupations in the early 1990s. The discounted output loss sum due to the gap btw. the dem-str. and the composition of existing human capital amounts to from 8 to 40 percent of the 1990 GDP.
