Abstract:This article explores the question of what happens when intersection relations of gender and occupation are challenged by organizational change. The examination is based on a case study in the Swedish Armed Forces; an organization that is currently in a state of substantial transformation. The purpose is now, instead of defending the nation's borders against armed attack, to participate in peacekeeping operations worldwide. When the "New Armed Forces" is constructed by informants, they envision changed patterns of both gender and occupation. This paper shows how gender and occupation intersect in informants' use of metaphors and images, analyses constructions of gendered occupational boundaries and problematizes their visions for the future. New dimensions are also added to existing research by gendering the theory of boundary work.
