Abstract:The article begins with a premise that attention to the underlying emotional experience of different parties is pivotal to achieving conflict transformation. It is further proposed that mediators are in an important position to help parties understand both their own and each others' emotions and also how they influence the unfolding conflict interaction. Transcripts from eight simulated common workplace conflict mediations are analyzed to find out the types of strategies mediators use to elicit emotional communication. Five types of strategies for emotion-eliciting are identified: confront avoidance of emotion, encourage emotion identification, paraphrase emotion, grant legitimacy and encourage emotional perspective taking.
