Abstract: | American R+D has long been dominated by the corporate giants. But while the investment has stayed constant, the amount spent on long-term research is diminishing - from 7-8 percent of total business outlays in the 1960s to 4 percent in the 1980s - as firms restructure their activity. In the 1980s a balanced corporate portfolio is the preferred target of large firms. There are two possibilities: the companies with the resulting higher concentration might strengthen their research, or they will sacrifice it for short-term profit improvement. |
