Abstract:Sears' rise from a mail order catalogue outfit for farmers to a retail giant is legendary. However, it has now toppled from its high pedestal and its sheer size made a major contribution to its downfall. Sears' quite successful competitors are smaller but some are now recording bigger USA revenues. The firm will have to reverse direction and give power back to the regions and even the unit managers to respond quickly to their individual markets. Sears would reorganise its headquarters and field teams vertically - so that layers of management were eliminated. The company tried to turn its luck around using several schemes including the store-within-a-store formula and the "intercept" store concept.
