Abstract: | The present paper develops a derived demand for physicians that is sufficiently general to embrace physician control, profit maximization and hospital utility maximization models. The analysis focuses on the following special aspects of physician affiliation: The marginal cost of a new doctor is unobservable, multiple affiliation occurs and physicians are not homogeneous. The estimations are consistent with the model and suggest that physicians should be concerned about reduced access to hospitals. |
