Abstract:Businesses which have won competitive advantage by the application of information technology arouse admiration and inspiration. This is because in general so-called strategic information technology expenditures have not created competitive advantage. It is described how American Hospital Supply has tried to forge electronic links with thousands of hospital customers all over America. As SABRE, an enormous information system for airlines shows, where a company wins competitive advantage from a customer-orientated IS system, it will probably be short-lived unless it is reinforced by, or flows from, other strategy ingredients.
