Abstract:Most Arab banks prospered in 1993, making satisfactory profits on the back of buoyant domestic economies. Uncertainty about oil prices introduced the occasional note of caution, but this was offset by the West's gradual emergence from recession and the consequent pick-up in international business. Saudi banks put in the most impressive performance, according to the latest available figures. Saudi Arabia is home to five of the 10 most profitable Arab banks, including the top three: Saudi American Bank and Al Rajhi Banking and Investment Corporation. They owe much of their recent succes to the Gulf war - or rather, the economic boom that followed it.
