Abstract:Demand for financing requirements poses a squeeze for the banks. Arab banking is unlikely to repeat the record profits growth of 1993 this year. While there have been some significant financial firsts recently, tougher conditions prevail. Economies, especially in the Gulf, appear sluggish at best. Yet Arab banking is of increasing domestic importance. It will remain so as long as many Arab markets remain relatively closed to foreign competition and the region stays largely removed from the emerging market developments sweeping the rest of the world.
