Abstract:War and peace issues and economic matters are strongly linked. A country or region that is plagued by conflict and war usually suffers and is hard pressed to meet its domestic needs, let alone have economic growth and social well-being. This is especially true if the country or region happens to be poor or dependent on imported materials, external trade, and foreign assistance. Dependence limits its freedom of political and economic choices. The same is true of a region under a prolonged military occupation.
