Abstract:The early 1980s saw a major development in international economics in terms of the integration of industrial- organization aspects of international trade into the more formal theory of trade. Prior to the 1980s, there were two rather distinct and even disjoint literatures. The author presents results from a relatively small number of papers which attempt to integrate multinational firms into general-equilibrium trade models, and which attempt to endogenise the location pattern of firms and their decisions to horizontally or vertically integrate across national borders.
