| Abstract: | Europe is coming increasingly integrated in its commercial and financial activities, amongst others indicated by the mergers of big European banks and companies, and the formation of the European monetary union. Major concerns remain in particular with regard to the large-scale degradation of natural resources. Sustainable development operates over the long run, into a future whose details are incapable of prediction. It will require substantial changes in our social-cultural, economic and environmental subsystems. |
