Abstract:Two revolutions have shaken European universities. This paper examines what effects these radical institutional changes have had on academic freedom. It explores the concept and content of academic freedom, the current prospects for its survival and the effect of changes in funding on the content of research and research process as such by interviewing a small number of Swedish researchers. The results indicate that the institutional changes are having a determine impact on the behaviour of academics, while academic freedom is still a norm.
