Abstract:This article's focus is on community relations in the mining industry. Community relations are conceptualized as a 3-dimensional practice involving i. working for the company to grasp local community perspectives, ii. bridging community and company perspectives to generate dialogue and mutual understanding and iii. facilitating necessary organizational change to improve social performance. It is argued that at a conceptual level, community relations should be delinked from public relations for it to gain strength as a professional domain of work.
