Abstract:The dual ladder aimed to provide an alternative career path, one that recognized and rewarded people for their technical contributions, a path parallel to the advancement that is available to successful managers. Some faults with dual ladder systems result from a failure to recognize that the system must be a dynamic process. Dual ladder systems must change and grow as the organization and culture of the company evolves. Recognizing the changes in the technical manager's role, Dow Corning management decided to update their technical ladder. The fundamental requirements for a technical ladder progression system are identified. It is to be credible and establish comparable paths for a technical or managerial career.
