Abstract:Contractarian business ethics (CBE) is popular in the present study of corporate morality. It is questioned how good this new trend is in business ethics theorizing. In aiming to assess CBE's credentials as a social contract argument, this study starts on a comparative analysis of the use of the social contract model in two earlier domains: i) political authority and ii) social justice. Based on this comparison, four criteria for any future CBE are developed. In order to properly apply the social contract model into the domain of corporate morality, it should be: 1. self-disciplined, 2. argumentative, 3. task-directed and 4. domain-specific.
