Abstract:Previous research and literature on the effectiveness of prenotification is reviewed and an attempt is made to synthetise the empirical literature through the application of quantitative integration technique. Results of homogeneity, combination and file-drawer tests are presented, response rates and effect sizes are summarized. The findings indicate that prenotification significantly increases the response rate, and show quite clearly that mail prenotification does not always work. The most promising contact strategy is a preliminary telephone call.
