Abstract:Surveys are vulnerable to many types of errors, mainly non-responses, late responses and incomplete responses. It is generally found that prenotification improves response rates. Another technique to that purpose is the use of commitment cards. These two methods are investigated, results are presented. Prenotification had a positive effect on response rate, however speed was significantly slower. The "foot-in-the-door" phenomenon was supported by the results of this research, but its use via commitment cards in mail survey research leads to reduced response rates and increased costs. Deflection rate is also estimated and some differences in types of deflections are discussed.
