Abstract:Some 272 USA/China joint ventures were reported by Chinese authorities to have been established between 1979 and 1986, representing a financial commitment of USD 1.6 billion by USA companies in China. A six-page questionnaire requiring written answers was mailed in 1986 to 124 USA manufacturing firms believed to have been in joint venture negotiations with an entity of the People's Republic of China. Hotels and other service firms were not included. Each of these ventures was painstakingly negotiated under conditions which most American business executives found difficult, leading American managers to continually seek more effective means of negotiating with China.
