| Abstract: | Since the publication of Mundell's article (1961), the debate on optimal currency areas has known alternate successful seasons. With the approval of the Maastricht Treaty this debate is again on the stage. This paper asks whether different industrial specialization of European regions affects significantly regional output changes. An answer to this question is developed following a "dual step" strategy. In the first step, the authors disentangle the different influences of national and regional effects on regional output changes. In the second, they measure the correlations between these effects as a way to obtain indications on the degree of symmetry of regional and national shocks. |
