Abstract:This study empirically examines the theoretical split between emphases on specialist (here as: spec.) vs. trans-specialist (as: t-spec.) knowledge (here as: knwg.) in the organization, or more generally btw. exploitation and exploration, a split dividing knowledge-flow theory at present, and thus representing an important issue for knowledge management (KM). There are found novel, insightful understanding of the factors contributing toward understanding the relative balance btw. spec. vs. t-spec. knwg. particularly, and exploitation vs. exploration in general. Three main contributions are provided: 1. extant theory relating to the substitutability (here as: subs-ty.) of spec. and interspecialist knwg. is critiqued, 2. new conceptual insight and empirical evidence concerning subs-ty. of these knwg. types in the organization is offered, and 3. the empirical power of computational experimentation to explore KM questions of both theoretical and practical interest is demonstrated.
