| Abstract: | Alternative hypotheses about the factors influencing the extent of intra-industry trade,defined as the share of this trade in total trade, within a multi-country and multi-industry framework are analysed. The investigation is limited to trade in manufactured goods where product differentiation predominates - in contrast to trade in primary commodities which consists largely of standardised products. Seasonal and border trade apart, intra-industry specification is not expected to occur in standardised commodities, except in a very particular case. |
