Abstract:In order to meet the challenge of the 1990s, manufacturing must be reorganized. The starting point is on the shop floor where over specialization of workers is the main barrier to improved productivity and quality. Restructuring should begin by changing the job depth and job scope of the direct labour force. Once the role of direct labour has been expanded, the requirements for support staff are reduced to a few truly expert specialists. All these structural changes must be supported by proper human resources management.
