Abstract:This paper contributes to the debate about offshoring (henceforth as: o-s.) of support functions in international business research. Analyzed is the success of o-s. activities (as: acts.), focusing on the time a firm takes to gain its expected cost savings and its targeted service level. It is hypothesized that firm-specific o-s. experience, publicly available knowledge on o-s., path dependencies, cultural distances, and the chosen governance mode influence the success of o-s. acts. The expected relationships are confirmed through an analysis of detailed data about over 500 o-s. implementations of the United States (US) and German firms.
