Abstract:By the mid-1990's the way environmental issues were handled had changed a great deal. Pratt & Whitney senior management had become committed to improving environmental health and safety performance and set aggressive goals. Business as usual was not going to work; a fresh approach was needed. In order to green products and processes, the vice-president of engineering formalized the Green Engine Program. The Green Engine Program was designed to cover all Pratt & Whitney products, and assess them from a life cycle perspective. To accomplish this the Green Engine Program brought together many departments, several which had never been directly involved in greening activities. This article charts the evolution of environmental management at Pratt & Whitney and explains the strategy behind the Green; Engine Program.
