Abstract:This paper discusses Amartya Sen's claims that committed agents do not or not exclusively pursue their own goals. The defenders of rational choice theory argue that even strongly heteronomous or altruistic agents cannot pursue other people's goals without making them their own. It is here argued that the objection to Sen's claims holds only with respect to individual goals. However, not all goals are individual goals; there are shared goals as well.
