Abstract:Imported from the USA and Japan, logistics has reached high importance in German firms as well as in academic discussion and research. Nevertheless there are a lot of problems to find a precise definition. Logistics as shown in the article can be understood as coordinating the flow of raw materials and products from the suppliers to the customers. This coordination is the "added value" of logistics: logistics cannot be defined on the basis of the physical processes of transportation, storing and handling as often done. They are necessary to realize an integrated flow of goods, but not the essence of logistics. The consequences of this point of view are also shown in the article.
