Abstract:It is examined how a firm could develop a technological or R and D strategy to help it to maintain the initiative in its markets. To remain profitable a firm must consciously manage its interfaces with its suppliers as well as its customers; it must take into account the threats and opportunities arising from such factors as the impacts of existing competitors, new suppliers and competitors entering the scene and the possible appearance of substitutes for its products. A summarizing checklist of practical options open to a firm to act on the conclusions drawn is presented.
