Abstract:The possibilities of a firm for dealing with a fluctuating or cyclic demand for R and D information are examined. R and D has various features that differentiate it from other aspects of corporate activity and consequently managerial strategies for dealing with R and D may vary substantially. The implications for R and D strategies and the acquisition of technology are considered under different demand conditions. There is a comparison of three ways of acquiring new technological knowledge: (1) R and D conducted in house; (2) employing external contractors; (3) inward licensing.
