Abstract:Management of innovations and ventures has to deal with discontinuities to a great extent. A new view of Foster's approach is proposed which is based on mathematical catastrophe theory especially on the cusp catastrophe, and leads to a new form of "innovation or venture portfolios". In these models two factors instead of only one are distinguished. It becomes clear that evolution and discontinuous change are two possible sides of innovations and ventures, thus bringing the opposing hypotheses of "catastrophists" and "uniformists" in the innovation literature to a synthesis. A crucial point is the illustration of all models by case studies of particularly interesting entrepreneurial ventures.
