Abstract: | In the time of globalization, the tourism business has transformed marginalised locations into consumerism centres. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this article approaches this issue by investigating Cuban tourism industry. The purpose of the article is to find out how the socialist state commodifies and through commodification also controls its populace. The paper argues that the state supported Cuban tourism industry results to Cubans commodifying their bodies, which gives rise to Cuban phantasms. Paradoxally these phantasms debase the state's control over its citizens. |
