Abstract:Flexibility is regarded as an important element in organizational design. The authors stress that the phenomenon of flexibility has two main aspects: flexibility as a characteristic of the range of strategic responses open to the individual firm, and flexibility as a characteristic of the relationship between firms. Analysis of both aspects is presented. It is reported that transaction costs do present an important problem for organization design in the way they help to operationalize the viability of different modes of contracting. Changes in ownership can be am important mechanism for achieving a transition to more flexible relations between firms and a means of reintegrating ownership and control.
