Abstract:This editorial presents a selection of the papers given at conference on empirical research in accounting and finance held at Manchester University in July 1991. The overall impression conveyed by the impressive body of evidence published in this volume is that United Kingdom security markets are efficient processors of information. There is no evidence of exploitable persistence in equity returns, a wide variety of information sources are rapidly reflected in share prices, and the market demonstrates an ability to distinguish permanent from semipermanent and transitory earnings changes.
