Abstract:Three studies were conducted to find out whether 3-and 4-year-olds interpret television images as mere pictorial representations of objects or as real, physically-present objects. Almost all 4-year olds gave clear evidence of understanding that the things are not actually present, while 3-year-olds seem to have a poor understanding of representation. Children gradually learn what television content is real or realistic and what content is not.
