Abstract: | Given the weakened financial condition of many Japanese companies and the rising risk of nonrecovery and other factors, interest in credit ratings is growing in Japan. Since rating-based regulations for bond issuance were introduced in 1987, the number of published ratings has increased, and about one-third of all publicly traded companies now have ratings on their bonds. Even so, ratings still play a relatively minor role in investor decisions, in part because trading on the secondary market has not been very active. |
