Abstract:Japan's synthetic fiber industry has lost its cost-competitiveness and no longer leads the world in exports. Even worse, it is now under attack in its sluggish home market from a rising tide of fiber and apparel imports. To survive , these companies must go after fast-growing markets elsewhere in Asia and develop global operations. Since the second half of 1995, the price of polyester fiber has plummeted in Asia because of problems in the Chinese market and massive new capacity brought on line by producers in Asia.
