Abstract: | Rapid economic growth in Asia's developing countries has given rise to both opportunities and challenges for Japan. On one hand, more and more Japanese companies are finding these countries to be promising export markets and attractive investment destinations. On the other hand, competition with Asia poses a threat to certain manufacturing sectors in Japan, giving rise to concern about a "hollowing out" of domestic industry. As used in Japan, the term "hollowing out" usually refers to rising unemployment and a weakening of the technology base that occurs as a result of the globalization of corporate activities. |
