Abstract:Broadband satellite systems stand ready to bring multimegabit data rates worldwide. Sounds great. What's the catch? Something special is in the air: your data. Or, at least it's about to be. The technological and regulatory hurdles to create true high-speed satellite networks have fallen. We've seen low- and mid-bandwidth system such as Motorola's Iridium and Hughes' DirecPC. But those were almost a parlor trick compared to the promise of 2 Mbps, 20 Mbps, and even 155 Mbps streaming down from the sky.
