Abstract:Hospitality application service providers (ASP) have emerged to offer hotel applications hosted on remote servers over the internet or an intranet, for a monthly fee. In theory, small independent hotels can benefit from gaining access to reasonably priced high-end applications, specialized information- and communication-technology (ICT) support, regular upgrades, and fast application deployment. A study of 106 small, independent hoteliers in Europe found that although these hoteliers acknowledge the advantages of the ASPs, they are still reluctant to use them. Apart from their idiosyncratic approach to decision making and the concerns expressed on operational and security issues, small-hotel managers also felt that ICT offers only a relative advantage, not a competitive one.
