Abstract:The concept of competition is not unambiguous as it is used in microeconomics. Three concepts of competition, each reflecting different research tradition, are discussed (1) industrial organization competition; (2) Chamberlinian competition; (3) Schumpeterian competition. The implications for normative theories of strategy for each of these three concepts of competition are discussed, and finally a simple framework which describes the types of competitive forces a firm is likely to face over time is suggested.
