| Abstract: | The deregulation of the Swedish banks started in 1983. As a result, competition has become stronger, margins have shrunk. But competition is not breaking up the banking cartel. By an estimation, 75% of the market belongs to Swedish commercial banks, and the three largest banks cover three-quarters of that. Now restrictions have been removed on lending by banks, etc. and overheating menaces the country. The liberalization is not welcome by everybody: e.g. the head of the trade union movement considers the new developments as unproductive. |
